Electricity usage of a Wi-Fi Router

Wireless routers provide internet or network access, they are very popular for home networks allowing users to share a connection across multiple devices and computers. Wi-Fi routers are typically solid state devices and do not have moving parts, as a result their energy consumption is very low and they are usually left on 24 hours a day to provide uninterrupted internet access. We estimate that a Wi-Fi router uses 2 to 20 watts, with 6 watts being average for a wireless router.

Click calculate to find the energy consumption of a Wi-Fi router using 6 Watts for 24 hours a day @ $0.10 per kWh.

Not much can be done to reduce power consumption of a wireless router, except to turn your Wi-Fi off if you are away for an extended period of time. Also keep in mind that your dsl or cable modem will use approximately the same amount of power as the router.
